Chapter 11 Shloka 37
कस्माच्च ते न नमेरन्महात्मन् गरीयसे ब्रह्मणोऽप्यादिकर्त्रे।
अनन्त देवेश जगन्निवास त्वमक्षरं सदसत्तत्परं यत्।।३७।।
Arjuna says:
O Lord! O Mahatma! O Creator of Brahm and Greatest of the great; O Eternal One! O Lord of Gods! O Refuge of the Universe! You are the Truth and the untruth and the Indestructible Essence which lies beyond both. Why should You not be worshipped?
Praising the Lord, Arjuna says:
1. You are the originating source of Brahm.
2. You uphold this creation.
3. You are the foremost and the greatest of all.
4. You are Yourself the cause of this entire creation.
Thou art eternal; Indivisible art Thou;
Thou art all these forms;
Thou art indestructible and imperishable;
Thou art the Truth as well as that which is untrue;
Thou art the Lord of all Gods,
Thou art the prowess of the Gods;
O Refuge of the universe and Indweller of the world!
Thou art also this world.
Thou art the Lord of the Universe and O Vaishvanar,
Thou dost dwell in each being.
Thou art the Supreme, Ancient, Divine Purusha
And the foremost of all mankind.
O Unmanifest One, Thou art all these forms and
Thou art also confined to a single body!
We cannot but bow before Thee, when Thou art the Lord of all.
O Abode of the Supreme, O Refuge of all,
Verily Thou art the Indestructible Brahm.
Little one, Arjuna has described the Lord here as One who transcends both Truth and the untruth – Sat and asat.
Sat
a) Any act which leads to the Supreme Brahm is included in Sat.
b) Any step taken towards the Supreme Essence is Sat.
c) Each divine manifestation of the Lord is Sat.
Asat
(See also Chp.2, shloka 16 and Chp.5, shloka 20)
1. Each attribute which augments demonic tendencies is considered to be asat.
2. Each step taken on the Preya path or the downward path is asat.
3. Each negative act is considered to be asat.
Witnessing the Lord’s fearsome form, Arjuna says; “Thou art beyond Sat and asat. All this Creation springs forth from You and finds refuge in You. Yet You are ever untouched and beyond all these.”
Here Arjuna is glorifying the Lord’s innate essence – the essence of the Atma.
