Why overcome krodha, moha and lobh?
Pujya Chhote Ma
As narrated by Pujya Chhote Ma
One day, as Param Pujya Ma was answering some questions of seekers in Arpana’s temple, there was a hustle near the door. An aged sadhu from Gharaunda, a small town near Madhuban, entered the Mandir and sat before Ma. He was obviously so agitated that he could not contain his anxiety.
Ma smiled at him compassionately, and asked him what was worrying him. He said, “I am now over 90 years of age. Despite my repeated endeavours, I have not been able to overcome my krodha, moha and lobh ( anger, attachment and greed). It is said that these tendencies lead the human soul to hell. What shall I do at this time of life? How can I overcome these and save myself from inevitable degradation?”
His agitation was so evident to all the people seated there. Some were also feeling pity at his obvious distress. No one expected the reply that Ma gave so spontaneously…
“Why do you want to get rid of krodha, moha and lobh? She said. These are such precious qualities gathered with such great practice over a life time!” Ma had a mischievous twinkle in Her eye.
“What do you mean?” the Sadhu stammered. “Every scripture advises that one must rid oneself of the scourge of these tendencies… are you saying that it does not matter if we are afflicted by them?”
Ma, Her eyes full of compassion, answered unequivocally. “Anger, attachment and greed are not bad in themselves! It is the way we use these qualities that make them vitiated and poisonous. If we use them for self establishment and self aggrandisation, they cause our downfall. If however, we use them for the upliftment of others, and for the benefit of all, these very qualities become precious and valuable. The difference lies in ones attitude. Simply transfer the way you use these qualities and you will transcend them!”
There were tears of gratitude in the Sadhu’s eyes. This simple revelation had given him such immense peace that we heard that when he left his body just a few weeks thereafter, it was in peace and in the calm stillness of understanding…
