Sadhak – Sadhana

A number of ardent people with faith, devotion and sincere dedication seek the Truth in all its manifestations. To them a Guru or Master will hold the promise of an end to their search. But, it seems that most of them do not know what they want, what they are precisely searching for or are unaware of the real aim of a spiritual life. To provide a true insight to this goal and to the process, the following points as explained by Ma to such a devotee in his quest for spiritual enquiry are re-produced:

What Sadhana means

  1. Sadhana is a devotional process of acceptance of the Self as the Atman and an automatic rejection of the non-Self.
  2. Sadhana is the attainment of knowledge which will assist in the discrimination between the Self and the non-Self.
  3. The desire for self-realization is obscured by innumerable inconsequential desires. Sadhana helps improving the futility of those desires. When such desires, which are the impediments in the realization of one’s goal, are eliminated the sadhak realizes the Atman in it’s true glory.
  4. Constant and one-pointed fixation of the mind and intellect which results in the cessation of desires is sadhana
  5. Sadhana is the process through which you can do away with the superimpositions on the Self, the Atman.
  6. It is a process which assists and banishes the delusion which is caused by ignorance.
  7. Sadhana is constant justification of the Scriptures.
  8. Sadhana is intellectual rejection of all that comes into conflict with the sayings of Bhagwan and the scriptures.
  9. Sadhana involves a devotional attitude towards worldly situations and the right discrimination therein.
  10. Yajnatapdaan – all are an integral part of sadhana and the success in these is indicative of your success in sadhana.
  11. Sakam karma will automatically lose their importance and any karma will naturally and instinctively be Nishkam karma.
  12. Ignorance is the cause of delusion and one’s identification with the non-Self.
  13. The feelings of “I” and “mine” are a delusions caused by ignorance, which causes superimpositions on the Atman resulting in darkness. Sadhana helps to remove the egoism which is generated by ignorance and by the attachment to then on self.

sadhak realizes the above and begins his sadhana to eradicate the ignorance within.

The aims and objects of a sadhak

  1. To realize the Self – the Atman
  2. To become a Gunateet
  3. To imbibe spiritual qualities (Daivi Gunas).
  4. To learn the art of nishkam service
  5. To study the scriptures and know the Truth.
  6. To realize the difference between the Atman and Anatman.

  2. One pointed intellect that justifies, upholds and wants to practice what Bhagwan and the scriptures say.
  3. Intense yearning for the realization of the Self.
  4. Intense yearning for the freedom from ignorance. It is imperative that the desire for the realization of the Self be the only desire of the sadhak – a desire to the exclusion of everything else.

  6. Studies the Scriptures merely because he wants to know the attitudes which he should have towards life: attitudes which would be conducive to the achievement of your goal – the Self.

  10. sadhak begins his sadhana with the sole purpose of realizing the Self and the non-Self.
  11. sadhak has insatiable yearning for absolute mergence and identification with the Atman.
  12. The point of view of a genuine sadhak will necessarily be different from any worldly man – from any other man for that matter, because a sadhak starts with the assumption that:
    1. He is not the body, but the Atman.
    2. Nothing but the achievement of the Swaroop matters.
    3.  The last speck of ignorance and delusion must go
    4. Maan-apmaan, hani-labh, jai-parajai, are of no consequence.
  13.  All that matters is absolute identification with the SwaroopExtreme patience, emotional, intellectual and gross endurance, strength and vigilance are extremely essential pre-requisites of any goal that a sadhak sets for himself.
  14. 14. A sadhak has a non-possessive attitude towards all men, women and children. He relinquishes all claims on relationship etc. But he does not take away the rights of other people on his body.

sadhak’s personal traits

  1. The standard of intellectual, emotional and gross integrity should be extremely high.
  2. A very high standard of justice.
  3. Courteously respectful towards all, which lowers the insurmountable spirit of self importance and self-pride.
  4. Never indulges in situations or conversations which are even likely to belittle the other.
  5. Obedience and extreme devotion to duty.
  6. Complete elimination of his likes and dislikes in influencing:

  2. actions of service
  3. attitude towards people.
  1. He will avoid unnecessary conflict and be hard working.
  2. Utilization of talents and potentialities for the service of others.
  3. Nishkam karma will be his natural swabhav.
  4. He will be sympathetic, compassionate, magnanimous and forgiving.
  5. Will be grateful for all the blessings received.
  6. He will be sincere to himself and thus sincere to all.
  7. Non indulgence in moods, grudges and insensitive about his short comings, but he is keen to know his faults so that they can be eradicated.

Practical life for the seeker of the highest state in Adhyatma

If you want to be anatmavaan and want to be a Yogi of the highest order, you will have to practice and acquire the following attitude towards life, the world and in your day to day reactions to the situations as they come by. Reactions will be:

  1. Indifference (udaseenta) towards your body and it’s needs.
  2. Disinterest in your personal security – gross or emotional.
  3. Knowing yourself to be the Atman you will be indifferent towards your own establishment or non-establishment
  4. Indifferent attitude towards all situations where any personal gains are involved.
  5. Non-attachment with the body will automatically make you non-possessive and your reactions towards people’s unkindness etc. will change
  6. You will not react to personal loss of prestige or downfall, remembering that you are not the body and you are practicing to rise above the body and to identify yourself with the Atman.

Actions will be:

  1. All actions will be nishkam and for the benefit of other people.
  2. You will make use of your body for the benefit of others and to the best of your gross, emotional and intellectual capacities.
  3. You will make all endeavours to establish others by:
  1. Earning more and giving away the profits for others’ benefits.
  2. By doing small jobs and giving the credit of success to others.
  3. By doing big jobs if the situation requires and giving the credit again to the others.
  4. Whoever needs your body for service, you will give it for their jobs and for the fulfillment of their dreams.
  5. Will serve with all honesty even the one who dislikes you.
  6. Will be the protector of the poor, humble and also of other people’s rights.
  7. Your justice will be absolute and all that belongs to you will ultimately be for the benefit of others.

The world with all it’s manifestations does not exist for you, but you exist for the world. Beliveing yourself to be the Atman, your only desire is for self-realization. Such a sadhak will:

  1. Give up his attachment with the body and his possessions, they do not belong to him any more. He becomes the benami holder and custodian of Ram’s property and a resident in Ram’s body, unless he can do this, Self realization is not only difficult, but practically impossible.
  2. Believing his body and possessions to be Ram’s he uses them in his daily life as Ram would have used them.

If the sadhak accepts the above in it’s completeness, then sadhana will become an automatic process and divine qualities will start to flow through his body. Study, prayers and concentration will become an integral part and the enquiry would reveal to him the attitude of an Atmavaan and take towards the Atman. This is the state of the Gyani Bhakt, whose life is only an ascent towards the realization of the Self.
