Word meanings

The process is possible only if a person is a genuine seeker and is desirous of knowing the Absolute - giving up the prestige of his own ego - and wants to rise above the concept of a personal mind and body, which includes reputation, the emotional world, and emotional desires. He also wants to transcend his intellectual concepts, which include his judgements, understanding, and orders. All these are essential pre-requisites for a sadhak's sadhana leading to virtuous living.

If a seeker makes this his base, he can do nothing for the protection of his prestige or of his assertive tendencies, or of any of his interests, whatever they may be. A person who does not try or rather who consciously averts personal defence, automatically gets disassociated from his mental attachments, his giving priority to his own body, and from his intellectual conceptions. He will be working for the establishment of the prestige of the other person even at the cost of his own personal defeat and downfall. These are his principles and his basic motivating and driving incentives.

A Seeker's Profile

  • Preparing himself for the acceptance of the teachings of the Scriptures, and for faith (shraddha) in the words of the prophet;
  • Basic understanding of his goal;
  • A patient desire to achieve that goal;
  • A basic yearning and desire to reach the goal he has set himself. Desire is related to the mind with its likes, but "yearning" in this context means his intellectual aspirations plus the support of his mind;
  • The pre-requisites for sadhana include a state of mind which is non-rejecting, non-condemning, and non-vehement. The seeker is comparatively speaking, a well-adjusted and balanced personality vis-à-vis the people who surround him, his circumstances, and the ever-changing situations;
  • His mind is the only real impediment in the way of the achievement of his goal. It is always best to make friends with it and take it along. A seeker's mind is happy and relaxed and is with him in his quest for Truth.
