The Need

Amongst the fertile fields of Haryana, in the 'breadbasket' of India, thousands of families lack sufficient food, clothing and other basic necessities. The parents are often labourers, harvesting the grains that feed the nation, but struggling desperately to nurture their own children.

Sharing her burden

To assist our rural sisters, burdened with poverty and deprivation, Arpana provides handicraft skills, materials and designs as well as undertakes the marketing of their production.

This 'window of opportunity' for crucial supplementary income helps women provide food, clothing and education for their children, whilst enabling them to become independent and self-sufficient. Employment is open to all trainees of Arpana. This ensures a flow of income into their homes after the training period.

A Smile of Security

Today these trained women spend their additional income on better nutrition, especially for children, clothing and improvements in domestic life, purchase of farm animals and medical and educational expenses for the whole family.

Their anxiety has been replaced by a smile of security.

Stitching dreams for her family, hopes for the future.

The Goal

The long term aim is to promote self-sufficiency and provide employment in rural areas by selling their production in urban areas, thus reversing the drain of manpower and funds from villages to cities.

Today these trained women
are earning good and steady
supplemental incomes from
their embroidery skills.
